Neither article is made in Beijing.
They bought neither house. = They didn’t buy either house.
He answered neither of the letters.
None of us are perfect.
Neither of the cars was / were damaged.
Neither he nor I am well educated.
②neither...nor...
—I don’t like this dress.
—Neither / Nor do I. 我也不喜欢。

There was a group called "The Fisherman's Fellowship". They were surrounded by streams andlakes full of hungry fish. They met regularly to discuss the call to fish, and the thrill of catchingfish. They got excited about fishing!!
Someone suggested that they needed a philosophy of fishing, so they carefully defined andredefined fishing, and the purpose of fishing. They developed fishing strategies and tactics. Then they realized that they had been going at it backwards. They had approached fishing fromthe point of view of the fisherman, and not from the point of view of the fish. How do fish viewthe world? How does the fisherman appear to the fish? What do fish eat, and when? These areall good things to know. So they began research studies, and attended conferences on fishing. Some traveled to far away places to study different kinds of fish, with different habits. Somegot PhD's in fishology. But no one had yet gone fishing.
So a committee was formed to send out fishermen. As prospective fishing placesoutnumbered fishermen, the committee needed to determine priorities.
A priority list of fishing places was posted on bulletin boards in all of the fellowship halls. Butstill, no one was fishing. A survey was launched, to find out why… Most did not answer thesurvey, but from those that did, it was discovered that some felt called to study fish, a few tofurnish fishing equipment, and several to go around encouraging the fisherman.
What with meetings, conferences, and seminars, they just simply didn't have time to fish.
Now, Jake was a newcomer to the Fisherman's Fellowship. After one stirring meeting of theFellowship, Jake went fishing. He tried a few things, got the hang of it, and caught a choice fish.At the next meeting, he told his story, and he was honored for his catch, and then scheduledto speak at all the Fellowship chapters and tell how he did it. Now, because of all the speakinginvitations and his election to the board of directors of the Fisherman's Fellowship, Jake nolonger has time to go fishing.
But soon he began to feel restless and empty. He longed to feel the tug on the line once again. So he cut the speaking, he resigned from the board, and he said to a friend, "Let's go fishing."They did, just the two of them, and they caught fish.
The members of the Fisherman's Fellowship were many, the fish were plentiful, but the fisherswere few.

The English Character
To other Europeans, the best known quality of the British,
and in particular of the English, is “reserved”.
A reserved person is one who does not talk very much to strangers,
does not show much emotion, and seldom gets excited.
It is difficult to get to know a reserved person:
he never tells you anything about himself,
and you may work with him for years without ever knowing where he lives,
how many children he has, and what his interests are.
English people tend to be like that.
Closely related to English reserve is English modesty.
Within their hearts, the English are perhaps no less conceited than anybody else,
but in their relations with others they value at least a show of modesty.
Self-praise is felt to be impolite.
If a person is, let us say,
very good at tennis and someone asks him if he is a good player,
he will seldom reply “Yes,”
because people will think him conceited.
He will probably give an answer like,
“I’m not bad,” or “I think I’m very good,” or “Well, I’m very keen on tennis.”
Even if he had managed to reach the finals in last year’s local championships,
he would say it in such a way as to suggest that it was only due to a piece of good luck.
Since reserve and modesty are part of his own nature,
the typical English tends to expect them in others.
He secretly looks down on more excitable nations,
and likes to think of himself as more reliable than they are.
He doesn’t trust big promises and open shows of feelings,
especially if they are expressed in flowery language.
He doesn’t trust self-praise of any kind.
This applies not only to what other people may tell him about themselves orally,
but to the letters they may write to him.
To those who are fond of flowery expressions,
the Englishman may appear uncomfortably cold.

经典英语美文朗诵:The story of life 生命的故事
Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away they were meant to be there , to serve some sort of purpose ,teach you a lesson,or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people maybe (possibly your roommate , neighbor , coworker , long lost friend , lover , or even a complete stranger),but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound way .
And sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible , painful. and unfair at first , but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential , strength , willpower , or heart.
Everything happens for a reason.Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck. Illness , injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small test whatever they may be ,life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet who affect your life ,and the success and downfalls you experience , help to create who you are and who you become.
Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact ,they are probably the most poignant and important ones.If someone hurts you , betrays you ,or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart. If someone loves you ,love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you ,but because in a way , they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.
Make every day count.Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and actually listen.Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high.Hold your head up because you have every right to.Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself , it will be hard for others to believe in you . You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.
Most impotantly,if you LOVE someone, tell him or her ,for you never know what tomorrow may have in store. And learn a lesson in life each day that you live.
That`s the story of life.

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart.She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brownhaired, 1)freckle-faced image of innocence. It waspouring outside. The kind of rain that 2)gushes overthe top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit theEarth it has no time to flow down the spout.
We all stood there under the 3)awning and justinside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others 4)irritated because naturemessed up their hurried day. I am always 5)mesmerized by rainfall. I get lost in the sound andsight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child come pouring in as a welcome 6)reprieve from the worries ofmy day.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the 7)hypnotic 8)trance we were all caught in. "Mom, let'srun through the rain," she said.
"What?" Mom asked.
"Let's run through the rain!" She repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain."
"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tuggedat her Mom's arm."
This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"
"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'If God canget us through this, he can get us through anything!"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We allstood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for amoment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what wassaid. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. Time when innocent trustcan be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith. "Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's runthrough the rain. If get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Mom said. Then off they ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and. They held theirshopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a fewwho screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet.I needed washing. Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they cantake away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take awayyour precious memories. So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to makememories every day!

The mourners dispersed from the graveside in groups of twos and threes. They paused to pay their condolences to the family, some shaking hands and others kissing and hugging. I couldn’t hear their words of comfort but imagined that they included such phrases as sadly missed and will be remembered and had a good, long life; all of which were perfectly true. I watched the family make their way along the path and I hoped that there would be no regrets for deeds done or not done, just good memories to reflect upon and their lives to live.
It was time for me to leave too, I supposed. I wasn’t prepared for this at all. How could I be? Maybe I should be making my way to the Pearly Gates, but I had no sense of direction when I was alive so I had no chance of finding my way now as a spirit, if indeed that is what I am. Is it correct to say “I am” if I am no longer, if I don’t actually exist? I tried to take stock of how I was feeling and realised it was just that what was missing. Feeling. Without my old body there were no aches and pains, nor was I experiencing any anxiety. I didn’t feel hungry, thirsty or tired. Time was irrelevant. Perhaps my spirit would just drift along in this way for eternity.
I had never believed in the concept of heaven or hell. Nor had I had subscribed to that school of thought that your spirit would enter another form of life, but it gave me something to ponder while I still could. I wouldn’t wish to be reincarnated as a human and go through all those stages before you felt comfortable in your own skin; falling in and out of love, swotting for exams and dealing with teenage children. Neither did I fancy coming back as any form of animal. I just wanted to continue floating aimlessly towards the glow of light up ahead.
“I think she’s back with us” said a voice I didn’t recognise.
I wanted to ask where I was and with whom but no words escaped me.
“You’ve been in an accident and you’re in hospital. Can you tell me how you’re feeling?”
Actually, I couldn’t. I’d been given a taste of freedom and now it would seem I was back to dealing with the struggles of everyday life. Would that seem ungrateful to the hospital staff?

There be 结构为非谓语形式时,be可以是不定式(to be)或(being),there 作逻辑主语。非谓语形式的there to be 和there being 结构可用作主语、宾语、或状语。例如:There being a bus stop near the village is a great advantage .
We expect there to be no argument . (作宾语)There being no buses , we had to walk home . (做状语)There not being any water to drink , he fell rather thirsty . (做状语)那么,什么时候用there to be,什么时候用there being呢?
1.做主语
(1) 有for引导,则用there to be
It’s a great pity for there to be much trouble in the class. It is common for there to be problems of communication between teachers and students.
(2) 没有for引导,则用there being
There being a public bus service is a great convenience to people.
The prison is heavily guarded. There being no hope of escape is certain.
(2)跟不定式的动词后用there to be。常见的动词有:want, expect, wish, like , hate, would like, prefer, mean, intend等。She denied there being any misunderstanding between them. Teachers don’t want there to be any students lagging behind. They hate there to be long queues everywhere.
There being nothing else to do, they went home. There being nobody else to help me, I had to do by myself.
It was too late for there to be any buses. It is enough for there to be five minutes.
There is said to be…
There is thought to be…
There is believed to be…
E.g. There is said to be oil under the North Sea.
There is believed to be some chances to succeed.
There is expected to be a boxing game on Sunday morning.
(1).在介词for之后,常跟there to be,在其他介词后,则常跟there being。
E.g. He was not satisfied with there being so little captial(资金) to use.
(2).there to be和there being都可以做某些动词的宾语,其区别在于:一般用不定式做宾语的动词多与there to be搭配;一般用V-ing做宾语的动词则用there being。
E.g. Would you like there to be a meeting to discuss the problem?
Can you imagine there being much difficulty in living in desert?
(3).there to be和there being都可做主语,但there to be之前要与for搭配,这种情况多见于it做形式主语的结构中。
E.g. It’s too early for there to be anyone around here.
It is impossible for there to be any more.
There being so good a teacher to guide you in every way is really a good advantage.
E.g. There being so much to do, he had to stay up.
There having been no buses, we had to walk home.
There being nothing else to do, we went home.
3.There be中间可以加入一些词,如be certain to, be sure, appear to, seem to, used to, have to等等
e.g. There used to be a cinema here before the war.
There doesn’t seem to have been any difficulty over the money question.
There appeared to be a war between his heart and his head.
There had to be a safe way.
There is sure to be a restaurant nearby.
There is thought to be an important change in their interview.

Dragon Boat Festival of 2014 falls on June 2. The holiday in China starts from May 31 to June 2, 2014. Welcome to China and explore the traditional folk customs of this interesting festival! Its schedule in recent years is offered in the following table.
Dragon boats are thus named because the fore and stern of the boat is in a shape of traditional Chinese dragon. A team of people works the oars in a bid to reach the destination before the other teams. One team member sits at the front of the boat beating a drum in order to maintain morale and ensure that the rowers keep in time with one another. Legend holds that the race originates from the idea of the people who rowed their boats to save Qu yuan after he drowned himself in the river. It is said that the winning team will bring harvest and happy life to the people of their village.
Now, some of ethnic minorities in China also hold dragon boat races like Miao, and Dai. Japan, Vietnam, and Britain regard it as an important game as well. In the year of 1980, it was listed in the state sports competition program held every year.

By Sandy Williams Driver
I got an engagement ring for Christmas. My boyfriend and I had been dating for almost a year and both felt the time was right to join our lives together in holy matrimony.
The month of January was spent planning our perfect Alabama June wedding. My mother, two sisters and I went to Huntsville, the closest town with a selection of bridal shops, to buy the gown that would play the leading role on my special occasion.
We had a wonderful time just being together and sharing silly jokes, but the day soon turned serious by afternoon: still no sign of the dress of my dreams. Both sisters were ready to give up and try another day in another town, but I coerced them into one more boutique.
I had a good feeling as we entered the quaint little shop filled with the scent of fresh flowers. The elderly clerk showed us several beautiful gowns in my size and price range, but none were right. As I opened the door to leave, the desperate shop owner announced she had one more dress in the back that was expensive and not even my size, but perhaps I might want to look at it anyway. When she brought it out, I squealed in delight.
This was it!
I rushed to the dressing room and slipped it on. Even though it was at least two sizes too large and more costly than I had anticipated, I talked Mom into buying it. The shop was so small it didn’t offer alterations, but my excitement assured me I would be able to get it resized in my hometown.
Excitement wasn’t enough. On Monday morning, my world crumbled when the local sewing shop informed me the dress simply could not be altered because of numerous hand-sewn pearls and sequins on the bodice. I called the boutique for suggestions but only got their answering machine.
A friend gave me the number of a lady across town who worked at home doing alterations. I was desperate and willing to try anything, so I decided to give her a call.
When I arrived at her modest white house on the outskirts of town, she carefully inspected my dress and asked me to try it on. She put a handful of pins into the shoulders and sides of my gown and told me to pick it up in two days. She was the answer to my prayers.
When the time came to pick it up, however, I grew skeptical. How could I have been so foolish as to just leave a $1,200 wedding dress in the hands of someone I barely knew? What if she made a mess out of it? I had no idea if she could even sew on a button.
Thank goodness my fears were all for naught. The dress still looked exactly the same, but it now fit as if it had been made especially for me. I thanked the cheerful lady and paid her modest fee.
One small problem solved just in time for a bigger one to emerge. On Valentine’s Day, my fiance called.
"Sandy, I’ve come to the decision that I’m not ready to get married," he announced, none too gently. "I want to travel and experience life for a few years before settling down."
He apologized for the inconvenience of leaving all the wedding cancellations to me and then quickly left town.
My world turned upside down. I was angry and heartbroken and had no idea how to recover. But days flew into weeks and weeks blended into months. I survived.
One day in the fall of the same year, while standing in line at the supermarket, I heard someone calling my name. I turned around to see the alterations lady. She politely inquired about my wedding, and was shocked to discover it had been called off, but agreed it was probably for the best.
I thanked her again for adjusting my wedding gown, and assured her it was safely bagged and awaiting the day I would wear it down the aisle on the arm of my real "Mister Right." With a sparkle in her eye, she began telling me about her single son, Tim. Even though I wasn’t interested in dating again, I let her talk me into meeting him.
I did have my summer wedding after all, only a year later. And I did get to wear the dress of my dreams - standing beside Tim, the man I have shared the last eighteen years of my life with, whom I would never have met without that special wedding gown.

The Five Boons of Life, 希望使你的心灵有所触动。
In the morning of life came a good fairy with herbasket, and said:"Here are gifts. Take one, leave theothers,And be wary, choose wisely! For only one ofthem is valuable."
The gifts were five :Fame, Love,Riches,Pleasure,Death. The youth, said, eagerly:"Thereis no need to consider";and he chose Pleasure.
He went out into the world and sought out thepleasures that youth delights in . But each in its turnwas short-liyed and disappointing, vain and empty;and each, departing, mocked him .In the endhe said:"These years i have wasted. If i could but choose again, I would choose wisely."

The fairy appeared, and said:"Four of the gifts remain.choose once more:and oh,remember--time is flying, and only one of them is precious."
The man considered long, then chose Love;and did not mark the tears that rose in the fairy'seyes.
After many, many years the man sat by a coffin,in an empty home. And he communed withhimself, saying:"One by one they have gone away and leftme;and now she lies here, the dearestand the last.Desolation after desolation has swept over me;but each hour of happiness thetreacherous trader,Love, sold me i have paid a thousand hours ofo grief!Out of my heart ofhearts i curse him!"

"Choose again."It was the fairy speaking."The years have you wisdow-surely it must beso. There gifts remain.Only one of them has anyworth-remember it ,and choose warily."
The man reflected long, then chose Fame;and the fairy, sighing, went her way.
Years went by and she came again, and stood behind the man where he sat solitary in thefading day, thinking. And she knew his thought:"My name filled the world, and its praiss were onevery tongue, and it seemed well with me for a littlewhile. How little a while it was! Then cameenvy;then detraction;then hate;then persecution. Then derision, which is the begining of theend. And last of all came pity, which is the funeral of fame.Oh ,the bitterness and misery ofrenown!"
4
"Choose yet again."It was the fairy's voice. "Two gifts remain. And do not despair .In thebegining there was but one that was precious, and it is still here.
"Wealth-which is power! How blind i was!"said the man."Now,at last, life will be worth the living.Iwill spend.squander.These mockers and despisers will crawl in the dirt before me,and i will feedmy hungry heart with their envy,I will have all luxuries, all joys, all enchant-times of the spirit Iwill buy, buy, buy!I have lost much time, and chosen badly heretofore, but let that pass;I wasignorant then, and could but take for best what seemed so."
Three short years went by,and a day came when the man sat shivering in a mean garret;and hewas gaunt and wan and hollow-eyed,and clothed in rags;and he was gnawing a dry crust andmumbling:"Curse all the world's gifts for mockeries and gilded lies! And miscalled, every one,Theyare not gifts, but merely lendings.Pleasure.Love,Fame.Riches:they are but temporary disguisesfor lasting realities-Pain,Grief,Shame,Poverty.The fairy said true;in all her store there was butone gift which was precious, only one that was not valueless,How poor and cheap and mean iknow those others now to be,Bring it!I am weary.I would rest."

The fairy came, bringing again four of the gifts, but Death was wanting. She said:"I gave it to amother's pet, a little child. It was ignorant, but trusted me,asking me to choose for it.You didnot ask me to choose."
"Oh,miserable me!What is left for me ?"
"What not even you have deserved:the wantoninsult of Old Age."

She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart.She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brownhaired, freckle-faced image of innocence. It waspouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes overthe top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit theEarth it has no time to flow down the spout.
We all stood there under the awning and just insidethe door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others 4)irritated because nature messed up theirhurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I getlost in the sound and sight of the heavens washingaway the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a childcome pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in. "Mom, let's runthrough the rain," she said.
"This morning?
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. I hope you still takethe time to run through the rain.
